MAYN RUHE PLATS (MY RESTING PLACE) - I first heard this beautiful song written and sung in the yiddish language as a young child. It was originally written by Morris Rosenfeld in New York City in 1911. The lyrics describe what it felt like to work in the sweat shops of the textile industry. (In the video we have taken the liberty to indicate a different industry - the shipyards). Do not look for me where birds sing or fountains spray for you will not find me there, my love. I am a slave to the rattle of chains and where life wilts next to machines - that is my resting place. But if you love me truely, then come to me and make it sweet - my resting place. I am indebted to Harry Allen for the filming and editing and to Tony Chamberlist for the audio recording.
